AFTERSCHOOL, Transcriptions of Places to Come
Isabel Croxatto Galería presents a selection of works by seven artists who graduated from the School of Art of the Diego Portales University in 2022. This exhibition reflects a generation's desire to reflect on the complex material and symbolic relationship established by certain dominant stereotypes that tend to regulate the definitions of nature and culture through binomials that constitute a kind of antagonistic figures, such as the healthy and the sick, the masculine and the feminine, the productive and the disposable.
Thus, the idea of the future is often used in political, religious and motivational discourses in a positivist sense to justify the malaise of the present as a necessary stage in the face of the promise of a better future. However, this sense of the term is agonising in the micro and macro natural, political, social, economic and cultural collapses that we are confronted with globally on a daily basis. The artists' proposals in this exhibition are made from a world that has already fallen, presented as the result of an escape, as operations that make it possible to understand the world under mobile definitions and in permanent plasticity.
In these operations, matter and form are articulated as the transcription of a drift through physical, abstract and corporeal landscapes; cut-outs that, brought from dissimilar geographies, appear with different resolutions, procedures and technologies. We see here a body displaced to photogrammetry and transfer (Marcelo Cruzat); a poetic viscerality deciphered in a pictorial exercise (Vicente San Martin); the night of the districts of Santiago transferred to a palette of heavy shadows (Ismael Sepúlveda); the plasticity of bodies in their permanent transitions (Diego Mora); the psyche as a saturated space that dissolves into multiple looping screens (Josefina Herrera); the dry fields of an abandoned mine on the outskirts of Santiago, transported as rust and corrosion (Alonso Bello); and urban natures translated into hybrid and precarious artefacts (Sebastián Márquez).
Transcripciones de Lugares por Venir appeals to visualities made of and with the body, not to show us its viscosities, humours or fleshiness, but by inscribing its condition on multiple surfaces that take into account the urgent need to recover experience. These surfaces - apparently closed - are the materiality of a latent space, a state of transit and the celebration of an unfinished body that cannot be fixed as a predetermined object but leads us to places yet to come.
