Vicente Prieto Gaggero is a Latin American visual artist and sculptor, a graduate of the Postgraduate Program in Contemporary Applied Arts with a specialization in Ceramics from Escola Massana in Barcelona.
His sculptural practice focuses on the use of clay as the core of a politically and culturally conscious process, establishing a dialogue between precolonial techniques and contemporary theories. This approach reflects on the complexity of the human condition in the Anthropocene era and the relationship between humans, matter, time, and the urban environment they have constructed in their image.
Through his sculptures, Prieto Gaggero investigates how the body has been understood and represented throughout time, dissecting both the visible and what lies beneath the surface to explore the invisible connections between nature, the city, and technology. In his work, fired clay and other materials are contrasted with synthetic formulations, symbolizing ecological disaster and the dichotomy between utopia and dystopia, which define an era shaped by human influence on the planet.
His work, influenced by a posthumanist perspective, highlights the tension between his Latin American identity and his experience as a migrant in Europe. Prieto Gaggero’s sculptures open up new interpretations of the body, presenting it as a dissectible, reconstructible, and transformable space, much like cities. This approach reveals a void where dialogue and inhabitation can occur, rethinking the relationship between humans and matter in a constantly transforming world.
The artist has participated in residencies in Barcelona, Madrid and A Coruña and has exhibited individually and collectively since 2014 in Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Mexico, the United States, and Spain.
Vicente Prieto Gaggero currently lives and works in Madrid.
