Rolankay Chilean, b. 1989

Fabián Barraza, a.k.a. Rolankay, is a visual artist and illustrator who graduated in Illustration from the Instituto Profesional de Arte y Comunicación Arcos in Santiago, complemented by self-taught training in painting.

Originally from the Atacama Region in northern Chile, he grew up surrounded by a desert landscape that has significantly influenced his artistic practice. After briefly studying Psychology, he moved to Santiago to pursue art studies.

His work focuses on painting and drawing, where figuration and solid colors—drawing inspiration from Matisse and Japanese Edo-period painting—play a central role. Through these media, Rolankay explores tensions and psychological impressions using symbolic traits, creating an atmosphere of meanings open to multiple interpretations. Humans, objects, and animals—often depicted as divine representations—coexist in exotic settings and landscapes reminiscent of his desert childhood.

In parallel with his artistic production, he has served as an Illustration instructor at Instituto Arcos and as an art director and editorial designer for independent publishers in Santiago.

Since 2015, he has exhibited his work in solo and group shows with Isabel Croxatto Galería in Santiago and Madrid, OMNI Gallery in London, and Sobering Galerie in Paris. He has also published the artist books Apariciones (2021, Libros Tadeys) and Zanshin (2017, Editorial DAMN). In 2022, he was a finalist for the XV MAVI UC Arte Joven Prize.

His works are part of institutional and private collections in Chile, Brazil, the United States, Spain, Germany, Italy, London, Korea, Turkey, and Hong Kong.

Rolankay lives and works in Madrid, Spain.
