Camilo Ortega is a visual artist who studied printmaking at the School of Fine Arts in Viña del Mar, Chile, and contemporary graphic arts at the National University of La Plata, Argentina. In 2013, he co-founded CAPUT, a platform for artistic thought and action based in Iquique, focused on research, education, territory, and collaborative practices.
His practice emerges from observing the territory he inhabits and the social, economic, and material tensions that shape it. Working from northern Chile and the Atacama Desert, Ortega explores contradictions between progress, extractivism, consumption, and everyday life, and how these forces transform both the landscape and our relationship to it.
Through painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, video, and performance, he constructs situations and imaginaries in which recognizable elements from his surroundings and popular culture are displaced through humor and irony. Desert landscapes, industrial infrastructure, borders, natural resources, and images associated with well-being, leisure, and consumption coexist in his work, revealing the paradoxes underlying promises of development and progress.
Territory thus appears not as a stable setting, but as a space in constant negotiation, shaped by relations of power, survival, and desire. Ortega examines who controls its resources, who has access to them, and which forms of life specific economic and social structures make possible. In response to these tensions, his practice also opens up the possibility of imagining other worlds and subverting established orders.
He has presented his work at institutions and venues including the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Chile, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo at the Universidad de Chile, Galería Gabriela Mistral, Centro Cultural de España in Santiago, Kiosko Galería in Bolivia, and the Museum am Rothenbaum in Hamburg, as well as in projects and exhibitions in Argentina, the United States, Brazil, Peru, and Germany.
His work is held in public and private collections, including the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Chile, the Contemporary Art Collection of Chile’s Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, and the Fundación Engel Collection. His work has been featured in publications including Artpress (France), publications by the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and Alzaprima, published by the University of Concepción.
