'Growing Sideways' takes its title from queer theorist Kathryn Stockton Bond who proposes, in contrast to the normative view of "growing up", that queer children "grow sideways" through interactions between childhood motivations and adult identifications. For Bond, 'queer children make strange combinations of meaning between people and things in order to grow up, transmogrifying (people and things) in a strange way.'
