The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes announces La jaula invisible (The Invisible Cage), the first major retrospective dedicated to Chilean artist Víctor Castillo, represented by Isabel Croxatto Galería. Opening on November 17, 2026, the exhibition will be on view from November 18 in the museum’s Sala Matta, bringing together approximately 70 works spanning two decades of artistic production.
Curated by Natalia Arcos, the exhibition offers an in-depth look at Castillo’s distinctive visual universe, where painting, comics, animation, cinema, and popular culture converge. Through childlike characters and unsettling settings, his work critically examines themes such as violence, power, innocence, and the contradictions of contemporary society. The exhibition brings together emblematic paintings, recent charcoal drawings, archival materials, sculptures, and interventions created specifically for the occasion.
La jaula invisible marks a major milestone in the artist’s career and a return to Chile after years of developing an international practice between Barcelona and Los Angeles. The exhibition is part of the MNBA’s Trayectorias en foco program, which highlights Chilean artists based abroad who have achieved international recognition.
Developed over more than four years, the project is organized by the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, with Isabel Croxatto, founder and director of the eponymous gallery, serving as artistic director. It also receives support from Fundación Inversión Cultural through Chile’s Cultural Donations Law. The exhibition is the result of a collaborative effort involving the museum, the artist, the curator, and approximately 50 private collections, making this unprecedented overview of Castillo’s work possible.
The exhibition will remain on view until April 11, 2027. Its accompanying program includes a monographic publication and public conversations exploring contemporary painting, collecting, and the international circulation of Latin American art.
